How to choose your brand colours?

Whether you are just starting a business or looking at a rebrand, brand colours are an important part of the process. These colours will be used everywhere from in store to online, in your advertising and on your uniforms. You’re starting a long-term relationship with your colours so choose wisely!

Here are a few things to consider when choosing your brand colours.

Consider how your brand colours will resonate with your target audience. While your colour choice should reflect your brand’s personality, it is also imperative that your audience reacts positively to your choice.

Check out the competitions’ colours! Chances are you want to stand out, not blend in. Your colour choice could be the right avenue for you to do so.

Remember that it is best not to choose a single colour. In truth branding requires a few colours to create an overall look and feel. Choosing a well-balanced palette at the start will bring consistency and sophistication to your branding.

You do not have to have a rainbow! Explore different shades of a single colour for a subdued branding palette. It can be a good idea to have at least one strong contrast colour in the mix, for when you are looking for that pop!

Be wary of the fact that popular colours will soon go out of style and avoid choosing based on trends. Consider how your chosen colours will age and ask yourself how you will feel about your brand colours in five years.

Brand colours can be utilised in a wide range of different ways. Reflect on how your colours look onscreen and in print. Plan how you intend to utilise your colours and ensure your choice is fit for purpose!

Happy planning!
